Photographer Harry Gruyaert (b. 1941) invites us on a sweeping urban journey. Whether he takes us to Brussels, Antwerp, Tokyo, New York, Paris, Ouarzazate, Old Delhi, or Moscow does not really matter. Fotograaf Harry Gruyaert (Antwerpen, 1941) neemt ons mee op een betoverende reis door de stad. Of dat nu Brussel, Antwerpen, Tokio, New York, Parijs, Ouarzazate, Oud-Delhi of Moskou is, is daarbij van ondergeschikt belang.

Zijn fotografie is een spel van kleur, licht en vorm: intense tinten, scherpe schaduwen en grafische lijnen die samen een ritmisch geheel vormen. Bij Gruyaert zijn stedelijke ruimtes geen statische decors maar levende composities. Als een jazzmuzikant improviseert hij met wat zich aandient. Zijn beelden gaan met elkaar in gesprek en tonen ongefilterd de emoties en atmosfeer van het leven op straat.

De tentoonstelling A Sense of Place van Harry Gruyaert is te zien in de Chapelle Saint-Martin du Méjan tijdens Les Rencontres d’Arles van 6 juli tot 4 oktober 2026.
