Slogan/Promotie

Richly illustrated monograph on the Belgian connection of sculptor Ossip Zadkine

Ossip Zadkine (1888-1967), one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century sculpture, shared an exceptional bond with Belgium, and Antwerp in particular. His Belgian network of gallerists, art critics, collectors, and fellow artists among the Flemish Expressionists served as a springboard to his international fame, spanning from Japan to the United States. The exhibition and the book Ossip Zadkine and Belgium focus on this connection for the very first time.

This richly illustrated book explores Zadkine’s extensive oeuvre, which comprises monumental and small-scale sculptures in various materials, gouaches, watercolors, and drawings, alongside numerous documents and vintage photographs. The work of his early years is placed in context with that of the Parisian avant-garde and the Flemish Expressionists. Additionally, attention is paid to the oeuvre of his wife, the painter Valentine Prax.
