“As much as I longed for it, standing at the kitchen window, I wanted him to drive up, come inside, look at me-really look at me-and take me in his arms so that, for a moment, everything would be alright again. But deep down I already knew it wouldn't happen. I felt it in my body, as clearly as I knew the pattern of the tiles beneath my feet. The end had already settled over us, heavy and undeniable. So instead I slipped away to the bedroom, slid under the covers, and tried to steady my breathing, pretending I was already asleep.”
