This catalogue aims to challenge often outdated dichotomies. It seeks to highlight the continuity and common origins of certain themes that shaped the architecture and design of these years. The stylization of nature, influences from outside Europe, the pursuit of constructive authenticity, the impact of machines, and local inspiration form the guiding principles that enable an interdisciplinary reinterpretation of the transformations between 1850 and 1950. The intention is, on the one hand, to explain the broader research into the concept of styles and the developments using the 30 chairs on display, and on the other hand, to emphasize the strong connections between these chairs, some of which were manufactured with an interval of 80 years. A second section offers a platform to researchers and specialists who shed light on the discussion surrounding specific case studies or broader perspectives.
